eSIM is the easiest option if your phone supports it — buy online before you go, activate when you land, no physical card needed. If your phone doesn't support eSIM, buy a tourist SIM card at the airport arrivals hall. Expect to pay about 100–300 RMB (~$15–$45) for a tourist SIM plan with data. Note that most tourist SIMs in China are data-only or have limited voice minutes.

🏛️ Tourist SIM Cards at the Airport
If your phone doesn't support eSIM or you want a Chinese phone number:
All major international airports have carrier counters in the arrivals hall — including Beijing Capital, Shanghai Pudong, Guangzhou Baiyun, Shenzhen Bao'an, and Hangzhou Xiaoshan. You'll also find SIM cards at convenience stores and vending machines, though these usually have limited plan options.
Your passport (mandatory for SIM registration in China). Bring some cash or prepare Alipay/WeChat — not all counters reliably accept foreign cards.
Airport tourist SIM plans typically range from 100–300 RMB (~$15–$45), depending on data allowance, duration, and carrier. Prices vary by airport and promotions, so check the counters for current offers.
The whole process takes about 10–15 minutes at the carrier counter.
📡 Coverage & Speed
All three carriers (China Mobile, Unicom, Telecom) offer excellent 4G coverage in cities and along high-speed rail routes. 5G is available in most urban areas. In remote/rural areas, China Mobile has the best coverage.
🔒 What About a VPN?
If you purchase a SIM card package, you may encounter issues with using Western software such as Google, WhatsApp, and Instagram. Therefore, you will need to use a VPN to access these applications — and you must complete the setup before arriving in China, as VPN websites may be inaccessible within China.
