How to Set Up WeChat Pay as a Foreigner (2026)
Having both Alipay and WeChat Pay is the gold standard.
π― Quick Answer
WeChat Pay lives inside WeChat (China's all-in-one messaging app). Download WeChat, register with your phone number, verify your identity with your passport, and bind your foreign credit card. No Chinese bank account needed.
So you've got Alipay sorted. Good. Now let's talk about WeChat Pay.
Honestly, if you only use Alipay, you'll be fine for 90%+ of your purchases. But WeChat Pay has its advantages β especially if you're planning to use WeChat for messaging (and you should, because everyone in China uses it). Having both is the gold standard.
One important difference: WeChat Pay is not a separate app. It's a feature inside WeChat, China's all-in-one messaging + social media + payments platform. So the first step is getting WeChat itself.
π± Step 1: Download WeChat
Search for "WeChat" (not "Weixin" β that's the Chinese name) in your app store. The developer is "Tencent."
- iOS: App Store
- Android: Google Play
π Step 2: Register with Your Phone Number
Open WeChat and tap "Sign Up". You'll be asked for:
- Your name
- Your phone number (international works)
- A password
WeChat will send an SMS verification code to your number. Enter it, and you're registered. One thing to note: WeChat sometimes flags new accounts registered from Western countries as suspicious. If this happens, have a friend who already uses WeChat verify your account.
π Step 3: Verify Your Identity
Once your WeChat account is active, you need to verify your identity to enable payments. This is separate from registering an account.
- Go to Me β Services β Wallet
- Tap the three dots in the top right β Identity Verification
- Select "Foreign Passport" as your ID type
- Take a clear photo of your passport photo page and a selfie
π³ Step 4: Link Your Foreign Credit Card
Go to Me β Services β Wallet β Cards and tap "Add a Card". You can link:
- Visa
- Mastercard
Unfortunately, WeChat Pay's international card support can be less consistent than Alipay's. Some users report the card binding step failing on the first try. If it fails, try again after 24 hours, or use a different card.
