Metro & Bus Guide for Major Chinese Cities
China’s major cities have world-class metro systems. They’re clean, efficient, cheap, and — crucially — easy to use for English-speaking visitors.
General Tips for All Cities
- Payment: You can buy single-trip tickets at machines (most accept cash and Alipay/WeChat Pay). Or scan QR codes at gate barriers via Alipay’s Travel section or WeChat’s transit mini-program.
- Signs: Station names are in Chinese and English. Announcements are bilingual.
- Transfers: Follow the colored lines and English signs. Transfers between lines are clearly marked.
- Navigation apps: Use local apps such as Gaode Maps or Baidu Maps for precise metro route guidance.
Buses
Buses are a handy backup if the metro doesn’t go straight to your destination, since they cover more remote areas. They’re cheaper than the metro but slower and often caught in traffic during rush hours.
In tourist cities, most buses announce stops in both Chinese and English. Still, pay close attention to the stop alerts. Many buses require scanning your transit QR code both when boarding and alighting, so don’t forget to scan again before you get off.
Transport Cards
Each city has its own transit card (Beijing: Yikatong, Shenzhen: Shenzhentong). Buy them at metro stations and top up with mobile pay. They work on both subways and buses and offer small discounts, but aren’t necessary for short-term tourists. Many feature unique designs, so you might pick one up as a souvenir.
Mobile Payment for Transit
This is the most commonly used method for locals — no need to buy tickets or carry a separate card.
Both Alipay and WeChat Pay generate universal transit QR codes for subways and buses. Open Alipay, tap “Transport” on the home screen, select your city, and scan at the turnstile. Payment is deducted from your linked card. WeChat works similarly through its “Ride Code” mini-program.
Tip: Separate QR codes are available for buses and subways, so double-check you’ve selected the right one before boarding.
